Pets Care About Vet Care If your dog or cat could talk, what do you think they would ask you for? Some dogs would ask for treats, treats, and more treats. A lot of cats would want more neck rubs. But beyond these superficial demands, your pets would probably also ask for good vet care. After all, a veterinarian will ensure their healthcare needs are met so they can go on living their best, most enjoyable life. This is a blog about vet care — the good vet care your pet wants! As a pet owner, we think you will enjoy learning more about what a vet can do for your furry companion.

3 Things To Consider When Looking For Pet Dental Care

Most pet owners are concerned with their pet's overall health. They take them for regular check-ups, vaccinations, and well-pet care. Unfortunately, many of these same people often overlook their pet's dental care. While they may follow the dental recommendations of their regular veterinarians, they are often unprepared to handle dental emergencies or more complex pet dental care services. How do you find someone to provide pet dental care? Here are a few things to look for.

Training And Specialization

Unfortunately, while less common than found in people, your pet can develop some of the same dental problems as people. Some of these include the following:

  • Broken teeth
  • Infected or abscessed gums
  • Periodontal disease
  • Malocclusion
  • Oral cysts or tumors

Of these, periodontal disease is the most common condition found in both dogs and cats who are more than a couple of years old. Without proper dental care, periodontal disease and other conditions can progress and affect other areas of your pet's health.

When searching for pet dental care services, seek out a practice with specialized training in all areas of dental care. While most vets can address and clean your pet's teeth, only some practices may be comfortable handling more complex issues.

Ask if they have an animal dental hygienist or a certified or licensed veterinary technician on board. Ask about what type of continuing education veterinarians have participated in as a part of their training or continued education.

Experience

Unfortunately, many pet dental problems are advanced before being properly diagnosed and addressed. This lack of diagnosis is often because your pet cannot tell you what is happening or how it feels. You usually have to look for signs and symptoms such as them not acting their usual self or being unwilling to eat or drink.

Look for veterinary practitioners who have experience treating complex issues of a pet's jaw, oral cavity, or teeth. Veterinary dentistry includes more than just cleanings, filings, and extractions. Look for veterinary dentists who are comfortable and experienced in making oral adjustments and conducting oral surgeries.

Comfort, Care, And Concern

You and your pet must be comfortable with any pet dental care services you choose. Visit the practice before scheduling the procedure with them. Ask for a tour of the facility and meet some of the staff. See what type of vibe they give off. Ask if you can bring your pet with you. This first visit can often tell you a lot about the level of care and concern they will have for your pet.
